Types of Backing Ring Flanges

Backing ring flanges are small but critical components used with stub ends, lap joints and angle-face fittings to provide
support and allow free rotational alignment. Taurus Piping Solution manufactures the following backing ring flange types:

  • Plain Backing Ring (Solid Backing Ring) — a solid ring used where simple support and sealing support is required. Commonly used with stub-ends and lap-joint assemblies.
  • Split Backing Ring (Two-piece / Split Ring) — fabricated in two halves for ease of installation around existing pipelines without dismantling. Ideal for retrofit or maintenance jobs where pipe insertion is impractical.
  • Loose Backing Flange (Lap Joint Backing Ring) — a loose, freely rotating flange used with lap-joint stub-ends to permit bolt alignment while the stub-end carries the pressure load.
  • Gasketed Backing Ring — a backing ring supplied with an integrated or companion gasket seating arrangement for high-integrity sealing where flange face conditions vary.
  • Welded / Machine-Welded Backing Ring — backing rings that are fully welded or machine-welded to bespoke shapes or support bosses for special piping assemblies or fittings.
  • Galvanized Backing Ring — backing rings supplied with hot-dip or electro-galvanized finishes for enhanced corrosion resistance in external or corrosive environments.
  • Split Ring with Locking Feature — split rings supplied with bolted or pins/locking options to prevent axial movement after installation (used in rotating service or where vibration is present).

Manufacturing Process

Inspection & Testing

All backing ring flanges are subject to documented quality checks and non-destructive tests as requested:

  • Visual and dimensional inspection to ensure fit with mating stub-ends
  • Spectro / PMI for material verification
  • Ultrasonic testing (UT) and radiography (RT) for critical components
  • Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) for ferrous materials
  • Hardness and tensile testing on samples where required
  • Third-party inspection & EN 10204/3.1 material certificates available on request

Packing & Forwarding

Backing ring flanges are packed to prevent mechanical damage and corrosion during shipment. Typical packing options:

  • Plywood cases or pallets (non-fumigated where requested)
  • Steel/free-standing cages for heavy or oversized rings
  • Individual wrapping with moisture barrier and desiccant
  • Clear labelling with item code, size, material grade, heat number and destination
